FAQ

Commonly Asked questions about Pet Pal Animal Shelter and Pet Pal Veterinary Clinic

Where is Pet Pal Located?
Pet Pal Animal Shelter is located at 405 22nd Street S., conveniently located in midtown St. Petersburg, just 4 blocks south of Central Avenue.

How long has your shelter been open?

The shelter itself has been open since 2004. However Pet Pal, formerly Pet Pal Rescue has been around since the mid 80’s.  It began in Orlando and then moved to St. Petersburg in the 90’s where we operated out of Petsmart until we were able to open the shelter.

What makes Pet Pal different from other shelters?

Our mission is rescue animals from other shelters that may be at risk of being euthanized due to illness, injury, or lack of socialization or training.  We also promote responsible animal ownership through spay and neuter services. We do not accept strays.

How do you decide what animals to take?
Since we are a small shelter, we only have a certain number of kennels. Therefore, we have a limit as to the number of animals that we can safely take in. Also, much depends on an animal’s indvidual medical needs and if we have the funds to afford the care and treatment.

What are your adoption fees?

Dogs are $150 and Cats are $60. All of our animals are spayed or neutered (depending on their sex), microchipped, dewormed, vaccinated and medically cleared by our vet.

Why do you need to own a home to adopt some of your dogs?

Certain breed and considered “dangerous breeds”. While we know that this is a stereotype, insurance companies won’t insure so landlords won’t allow.  Additionally, hound dogs are not good in apartments due to their vocalizations.

Where is Pet Pal Veterinary Clinic located?

Our clinic is located at 1900 34th Street S. (US 19), St. Petersburg

What is the Clinic’s Hours of Operation?

Tuesday through Friday from 9am-5pm and Saturdays from 8am-12pm

Can I just drop in and bring my animal to the clinic?
No, you have to make an appointment.

Are their services free?
No, but they are affordable. Please contact the clinic directly to inquire about prices (727) 328-7729. If you happen to get our answering machine, it just means that we are on another line-please leave a concise message and we will return your call.

Are you ever in need of volunteers?

We are always in need of volunteers. Shelters are not for the faint of heart. It is a lot of hard work-kennel scrubbing, dog walking, cleaning up poop. We ask that you visit our shelter and take a tour. Then, if you decide that this is the place where you would like to volunteer, we’ll have you fill out an application and set up a schedule.

Do you send your pets across country? I am interested in one of your pets taht I saw ont he album list – Susie. I just had to put down my English Springer, Emily, who was 12 1/2 years old. My heart has a huge hole that needs to be filled. We currently have a chocolate cocker, Daphne, who has not eaten in a week since Emily left. I think we all need a new playmate. Emily loved to swim in our pool and go for long walks. I think Susie would enjoy a little fun in the sun too. We live in Stockton, CA. Please send me more information. Thank you, Lynn Finch.

  • Gloria says:

How old do you have to be to volunteer?

    • admin says:

      Hi Gloria,
You must be 16 years of age or older to volunteer. If you are under 18, you must also have parental consent. If you are under 16, but would still like to help out, please visit our “contact” window. There is a “voluteer opportunities” section that explains other ways to help. Thanks!

  • Saundra says:

Are you currently hiring for any help?

  • Aliesha Bohan says:

Hello! I am considering adopting one of your chinchillas. I live about two hours away in Deltona, and was wondering how long the adoption process takes. Would I be able to make a single trip over to St. Pete, or would adopting require me to make multiple trips? Can anything be handled over the phone? Thanks for your time and help.

  • laufrin says:

hi there, thank you for the great work you do. could you tell me what the average stay is for an animal at your shelter. how long is the longest stay before adoption? thanks for your time :)

  • Janis says:

My dog is sick, cannot afford to take her to the vet with all the charges they will incur. She’s an 8 y.o. Brindle Pitt female. She’s not eating, peeing in the house, which she never does, not drinking…advice please.

    Thanks

  • kara p. says:

I heard volunteering at the shelter is no pay, but that you could possibly get a permanent employee position there even if you’re not in school to become a clinic employee, is this true?

    • admin says:

Kara, we have both the clinic and the shelter. The shelter is run almost exclusively by volunteers. We have paid positions at the clinic but we are currently not hiring. We would love for you to volunteer, though and be a part of what we do!

  • Tara says:

I wanted to thank you all for helping me find a home for my cat, Tiger on such short notice. While we miss him terribly, I feel so much better knowing that you all found him a happy, loving home. I loved reading your description of him, about how he was a lover that loves your attention. That really warmed my heart. Thanks again, you guys are really angels!

  • Milly says:

Do you take aluminum cans? We would rather
give them to you to make money then just
place them in the recycle bin. Thank you for
all you do. Can you still purchase “bricks”
to be personalized for you front sidewalk?

    • admin says:

Hi, we don’t take aluminum cans but I appreciate you thinking of us. Yes you can still purchase brick pavers. If you go to our donation button on the website, it will provde you with more information.

  • Susan Stephens says:

I have a beautiful, healthy cat named Hannah. My husband and I have temporarily re-located to WI, and this year I have someone living in my home caring for her. It is becoming clear that we will be here longer than this academic year, and I believe I need to let go of this dear friend of mine. She is 6 years old. Is there I chance that you would take her and put her up for adoption? I can’t bear to put her in an ordinary shelter.
    Thank you,
    Susan

    • admin says:

Susan, we presently have no room at our shelter-we are past capacity. The SPCA of Tampabay accepts open surrenders or you may want to check with your vet and see if you can place a notice in his/her office.

  • Julie Lexanne Berry says:

Do I need to call to make an appointment to visit the shelter, take a tour and fill out a volunteer application? If not, when is a good time to come by? I work full-time so my volunteer hours would need to be evenings and weekends. Thanks!

    • admin says:

You can come by the shelter anytime between 11-4:30 Tuesdays through Friday and 10-4:30 . These are also the hours that are available to do volutneer hours at the hslter though we always need assitance at special events which occur at night time and in the evening.

  • Amanda says:

When adopting a dog, does everyone living in the home need to be present? I can’t seem to find this information in the website.

    Thanks.

    • admin says:

Yes, it’s important to have everyone in the house meet the animal before it’s adopted. This also includes any dogs you may already have in your house hold.

      • Amanda says:

My mother and I live in the same home, but our work schedules rarely place us together during the morning or early afternoon. I would be the one adopting a dog. Is there any way to place a hold on a specific dog until both of us can come adopt him?

  • Vi says:

  • Shawnah says:
