F.A.Q.

Commonly Asked questions about Pet Pal Animal Shelter and Pet Pal Veterinary Clinic

Where is Pet Pal Located?
Pet Pal Animal Shelter is located at 405 22nd Street S., conveniently located in midtown St. Petersburg, just 4 blocks south of Central Avenue.

How long has your shelter been open?

The shelter itself has been open since 2004. However Pet Pal, formerly Pet Pal Rescue has been around since the mid 80’s.  It began in Orlando and then moved to St. Petersburg in the 90’s where we operated out of Petsmart until we were able to open the shelter.

What makes Pet Pal different from other shelters?

Our mission is rescue animals from other shelters that may be at risk of being euthanized due to illness, injury, or lack of socialization or training.  We also promote responsible animal ownership through spay and neuter services. We do not accept strays.

How do you decide what animals to take?
Since we are a small shelter, we only have a certain number of kennels. Therefore, we have a limit as to the number of animals that we can safely take in. Also, much depends on an animal’s indvidual medical needs and if we have the funds to afford the care and treatment.

What are your adoption fees?

Dogs are $150 and Cats are $60. All of our animals are spayed or neutered (depending on their sex), microchipped, dewormed, vaccinated and medically cleared by our vet.

Why do you need to own a home to adopt some of your dogs?

Certain breed and considered “dangerous breeds”. While we know that this is a stereotype, insurance companies won’t insure so landlords won’t allow.  Additionally, hound dogs are not good in apartments due to their vocalizations.

Where is Pet Pal Veterinary Clinic located?

Our clinic is located at 1900 34th Street S. (US 19), St. Petersburg

What is the Clinic’s Hours of Operation?

Tuesday through Friday from 9am-5pm and Saturdays from 8am-12pm

Can I just drop in and bring my animal to the clinic?
No, you have to make an appointment.

Are their services free?
No, but they are affordable. Please contact the clinic directly to inquire about prices (727) 328-7729. If you happen to get our answering machine, it just means that we are on another line-please leave a concise message and we will return your call.

Are you ever in need of volunteers?

We are always in need of volunteers. Shelters are not for the faint of heart. It is a lot of hard work-kennel scrubbing, dog walking, cleaning up poop. We ask that you visit our shelter and take a tour. Then, if you decide that this is the place where you would like to volunteer, we’ll have you fill out an application and set up a schedule.
